What is at the very center of the rainbow? What color is lacking in cities? What color is the heart chakra? Green. What do most people die of? Heart disease. Green foods are extremely important for our overall well-being. They keep us centered. Their high alkaline-mineral content keeps us calm.
If we lived in Nature, eating 100% wild foods as 100% of our ancestors did just a few thousand years ago (before agriculture), we would find that green leaves would be a big part of our diet. Why? Because that is what is out there in the world. Visit any forest, farm, park, or orchard, and you will find that the predominate food available is wild green-leafy foods.
All frugivorous primates eat green-leafy vegetables. Orangutans, chimps, and gorillas eat grass, leaves, stems, among other foods. They eat these foods in their wild state. Humans are the weakest primate (pound per pound) because humans eat cooked food and agricultural food. Imagine what would happen to a tribe of gorillas fed on donuts and coffee for several generations. If we ate wild raw food we would find that we would become strong like wild animals.
In December 1930, the press reported the incident of a young human infant who had been kidnapped by a baboon. For 13 years thereafter, the young boy was raised among the baboons. At age 14, he was captured by a hunter and returned to his mother. It was soon noted that he was "tremendously powerful" being able to use a 14 pound sledgehammer in the blacksmith shop and turning a heavy lathe all day without the slightest trace of fatigue. His mother was never been able to make him eat cooked food.
In March 1935, a young girl was found living in the Carpathian Mountains (in Europe). She was captured in a remote district where wild boars, wolves, and bears lived. When captured she put up a great fight against several lumbermen and exhibited "superhuman strength." She refused all food except for flowers, plants, and grass. These are exciting stories which reveal the tremendous power in wild foods and wild living.
We begin to incorporate wild green foods in our diet by first educating ourselves about them. I personally enjoyed the book "Wild Edible Plants: A North American Field Guide" so much that we (Nature's First Law) now distribute it to health-food stores and all those interested in wild foods. I have found tremendous value in that book, because it has color pictures which make identification easy.
Once you can identify wild edible foods, then introduce them slowly, but surely, into your diet. Include them with salads, blend them with smoothies, eat them plain.
I personally enjoy wild dandelion (a true superfood), malva, lamb's quarters, green onions, nettles, mustard, wintercress, celery, and watercress. The strengthening power of these foods is fairly obvious after including them in your diet for several months.
You can allow wild green foods to grow wildly in your garden or you can forage for them. Avoid picking wild foods near water sources in large towns and cities as they could be contaminated.
Wild green foods seem to be a big part of the answer. Wild foods will always pick up every mineral available, and thus, they help prevent mineral deficiencies. Wild green foods definitely reintegrate you to the Earth as they identify for your body exactly where you are on the planet. Additionally, eating wild food is fun!
